Survivorman – Behind the Scenes

Posted: September 23rd, 2007 | Author: | Filed under: People, Personalities | No Comments »

The last “episode” of Season 2 of Survivorman was a behind the scenes look at how Les and his crew makes each show. Wait, you ask, haven’t there only been a few shows? Yes, there were, so hopefully Les is hard at work on Season 3. It seems like they worked on these shows before Les and Bear hit it big, so they were not sure of how many the networks would want.

More New Toys – Ferrocerium Rod Blanks (Firesteels)

Posted: September 20th, 2007 | Author: | Filed under: Fire, Preparations | No Comments »

I ordered some firesteel blanks from the folks over at ferrocerium.com last week, and had a nice envelope full of fire starting rods waiting for me in the mail yesterday. I ordered one of each of the rods that they sell, just to see how the different sizes compare. I personally prefer these over one of the LMF ones, since the most expensive one at this site is still cheaper than the LMF Scout. I can also make my own handle or lanyard for these, and don’t have to deal with the garbage striker that comes with an LMF.

Survivorman – Cook Islands

I fired up the Tivo yesterday and watched the newest Survivorman, where Les goes to the Cook Islands. As always, it was entertaining. It’s good to see that men his age are still haven’t grown up, judging from how many times he said “booby” in an amused tone. Yes, I giggled each time. I always wondered why he never tries fishing (birding?) for birds. I have seen guys do it before, and it seems to work very well, especially on sea birds.

Ranks – Help me out

Posted: September 5th, 2007 | Author: | Filed under: Admin | No Comments »

phpBB (the forum software) gives me the ability to create ranks for users with a certain number of posts. I am trying to find some plugins that will let me use more criteria, but post count is all I have to work with right now. I am thinking about creating ranks for new users and people with 100, 500, 1000, and 2500 posts. I have some retarded amount (2500, I think) of free email addresses with my hosting package, so people that make it to the 2500 level would get their own @goingprepared.com email address. I know, free email addresses! I am at the forefront of 1995 Internet technology!

Target clearancing their summer stuff

Posted: September 5th, 2007 | Author: | Filed under: Deals | No Comments »

In case any of you do not check Target for clearance items religiously like I do, Target is clearancing all of their summer stuff right now. Not all stores are the same, but the ones around me have most of their items at 30-50% off. Now is a great time to stock up on garden tools and chemicals, mosquito repellants, grills and grill accessories, etc.

Some of the highlights that I saw:

REI Sahara Tech Tee

I like to wear solid color t-shirts when not at work (OK, at work a lot too). My usual choice for materials has been cotton, especially when you can get high-quality shirts at Target for under $10. They look nice, feel nice, and last many moons. The only problem I had with them is that they do not breathe well or handle moisture well. Since I live in GA, that tends to be a big problem for me.

Ultrafire EMR1 Rebel

Posted: September 2nd, 2007 | Author: | Filed under: Light, Preparations | No Comments »

It has been well over a week since I last ordered a flashlight, so I starting shaking and going into withdrawal. Luckily, Kaidomain was there to the rescue with the new Ultrafire EMR1. I have seen what the new Rebel 100 LED can do, and was impressed. This light is rated at 200 Lumens (probably from the LED, not out the front). Ultrafire likes to exaggerate, so I am expecting something quite a bit lower than that. Either way, it should be ridiculously bright. KD usually does a decent job of QA before sending any lights, which is why I went with them over DX.

I almost pulled the trigger on one of the Fenix Rebel models, but Fenix has never really done it for me. Ultrafire is not exactly known for producing high quality circuits or machining, but early reviews of this light seem to say that it is fairly nice, and it is about 2/3 the price of a Fenix. KD is supposedly shipping all of these via an Express courier, so I should be able to let you all know if it is a smart purchase soon.

Survivorman – African Plains

Posted: September 2nd, 2007 | Author: | Filed under: People, Personalities | No Comments »

I think Les is tired of surviving with just a knife and the clothes on his back. He was, once again, very well equipped. Multiple cutting tools, first aid kit, bottle, fire starting method, a HOT AIR BALOON, etc. Despite all that he had, he still drank water multiple times without treating it in any way. You would have thought he would have learned his lesson after having that stomach parasite for a year that caused him to go on some serious medications.

It is still one of my favorite shows on TV. I wish he would do at least one episode showing what to do if you have absolutely nothing other than the clothes on your back. That’s what it seems like most of the people on that
“I shouldn’t be alive” show have, other than maybe a shitty knife.

OK, I’m done being angry at a TV show now. At least until Lost starts back up, anyway.
